CGHS procures these medicines from IMPCL directly and the remaining 75 classical medicines of the formulary and branded formulary medicines are procured from other manufacturers through tender process.
The medicines not available in CGHS dispensary are procured through authorized local chemist.
The Formulary of Unani Medicines has been prepared by a committee consisting of Senior Officers of Department of AYUSH and Senior Doctors from AYUSH Wellness Centres of CGHS.
It has tried to cover almost all the medicines required to treat all major and common diseases at dispensary level.
It is not the fact that incharges of CGHS Unani Dispensaries were authorised in the past to prescribe medicines over and above the formulary and that this has been curtailed by a recent Order issued on the instructions of Additional Director, CGHS (HQ).
Additional Director (HQ) has emphasized the need to follow the extant instructions /guidelines for issuing of medicine at the dispensary level.
The Medical Officers have been advised to follow CGHS Formulary of Unani Medicines which is quite exhaustive and includes medicines for treating almost all disease conditions.
However, in case of emergency the Medical Officer can also prescribe medicines from outside the formulary in deserving cases.
This was stated by Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today.
